Open Awareness as a form of psychic development

In some circles the idea and practice of psychic development is something to be avoided or shunned and I tend to be cautious about using this term because it can be met with prejudice and ridicule. However, it is simply a way of using our senses in an expanded way. I've been practising energy awareness and expansion for over 20 years and one of the practices I learnt way back when was called "owning the room". This would involve an initial grounding, which is very important for any energy awareness practice, followed by extending lines of light from the feet to the corners of the room to own the floor and then extending lines of light from the head to the corners of the ceiling to then join all the sides together to own the room. In this space excess or old energy can be released and the participant can be replenished with earth energy(1). Open awareness is very similar to this practice only using different terminology.

A similar practice can be done with eyes open with the intention of expanding the energy body beyond the physical self and even beyond the room to a much larger area. This is used in particular when performing an energy clearing intention practice such as the Violet Flame of Saint-Germain. The states that these practices bring about can be anchored and then re-introduced at will by concentrating on the practice name.

The intention of "pinging on" open awareness through peripheral vision (such as that practised by the Bihar School of Yoga (2)) can then reinstate the Violet Flame energy which has a very pure and loving intention to dissolve negative thoughts and disharmony and improve relationships.

It is good now to be using these energy awareness and expansion practices within the ASE framework as the practice of open awareness simply anchors me to my previous experiences of energy expansion and psychic development and means that all that I have previously learned supports my current path.

I appreciate Jevon's naming of Open Awareness as it uses secular words that are unlikely to impinge on people's belief systems whilst involving energy awareness and expansion, mindfulness and non-duality practices.

I would be interested to hear your response to the term psychic development and whether you would use this term with others who may be unfamiliar with it and what other practices you use to which open awareness is similar.

I loved this post Narayani, thank you!

The term psychic development is often met with a negative response, but I have often found that on explanation people soon change their tune. Everyone has psychic abilities; it is another terminology for your intuition or “trusting your gut”.

A lot of what we have learnt on this course is about expanding beyond the conditioning that has been set upon us by society and stripping back to our core beliefs without outsider influences. We saw this a lot in the introduction to the course when we broke down into parts the physicality of our instincts, how we perceive it in others, slowly progressed this into the gap between and sensing the energy between us. This all contributes to the training of our "intuitive development". We saw this even in our earliest modules of looking over the fundamentals of “the map is not the territory”, our basic presuppositions and structure of our intuition. In my opinion, this helps us to reactivate this psychic ability, trust those rising instincts within our bodies and minds.

In fact, I grew up in a family with clairvoyants and mediums, who would take a lot of alternative approaches to some of my friends families. It was almost frowned upon as this as it is “not the norm” and they did not understand it. However, intuition is the most natural ability and resource that we have.

To answer simply, for the terminology I always swap out the word’s psychic with “intuition” or “intuitive development” in this context and it is met with a different reaction.

In addition to this, practices that I take part in where I believe open awareness is similar to would be meditation, focus on my breathing and visualization with the help of my vision boards.
