Nature has a beautiful and wise way of teaching us. When I think about transpersonal coaching, and compare it with nature; I like to imagine a Transpersonal Coach as a strong branch of a deeply rooted, magnificent tree in the middle of a forest.
A branch exists always in open awareness—it is pure, flexible, solid, and safe. It is supported by something greater: a wise, grounded presence.
This is the place where a caterpillar would choose to be and build its cocoon—to rest, to surrender, and to enter the sacred space of transformation.
In this way, the caterpillar (the client) is offered a safe and supportive space—a liminal space—where they can undergo their metamorphosis, they begin to recognize who they truly are, and gently emerge into a more authentic and expanded and better version of themselves. Transformed they will leave and go-on (fly-on) with a different view of life and purpose.

I resonate very deeply with what you share, both personally and professionally. Working with inner parts from a transpersonal perspective has also been, for me, a powerful way of moving beyond the sense of “brokenness”, and of shifting from the idea that something needs to be fixed to the recognition of an inner wholeness and beauty already present, waiting to be revealed.

What touches me in your words is the way this witnessing awareness allows us to meet our parts and our shadow without losing connection with something deeper within us. It feels like a space where nothing needs to be rejected, and yet everything can gently unforld and transform.

In my experience, this approach is also very supportive in addressing the subtle tendency towards avoidance or denial that can sometimes arise in spiritual work. When the transpersonal dimension is grounded in presence, embodiment, and compassionate engagement with our inner parts, it opens a path towards genuine integration.

I also resonate with what you describe about the sense of connection beyond the individual self. When this is truly felt, our heart can naturally open and allow us to see others beyond their wounds, in their deeper humanity and intrinsic divinity. I find it deeply meaningful that, in our role as coaches, we have the opportunity to recognise this beauty in others and to gently support its unfolding.

Thank you for your beautiful reflection.

Transpersonal psychology has profoundly shaped the way I understand the mind-body-spirit connection, both in my personal life and in my professional practice. Coming from a background in neuroscience and addiction, and working as an Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner, I’ve spent years exploring the complexity of human behavior—our patterns, reactivity, and the ways trauma imprints itself on the nervous system. What transpersonal psychology has offered me is a reinforcement of a unifying lens that goes beyond pathology and into possibility of wholeness and healing through connection, emdoiment, awareness and self-empowerment.

I’ve come to see transpersonal psychology as pointing toward an innate awareness within each person—a witnessing presence that can observe thoughts, emotions, and internal “parts” without becoming overwhelmed or defined by them, much like the concept of "Self" in IFS therapy. This awareness allows individuals to notice their pain, their protective strategies, and their unmet needs, while also holding space for curiosity and compassion. From this place, there is an opportunity to respond rather than react, and to move through the world in alignment with deeper values and integrity.

What personally, and I assume globally, makes this perspective so impactful is that it fundamentally shifts the assumption that people are broken. Instead, it suggests that the capacity for healing, clarity, and transformation already exists within each individual. The work, then, is not about fixing something defective, but about removing the obstacles that obscure this inner knowing.

In my own life and practice, this has been transformative. As soon as attention is directed inward with openness—without judgment or urgency to “solve”—something begins to shift. There is access to a larger sense of self that is not limited to past conditioning or present struggle. This connection to something greater than my individual parts has created space for meaningful change in my life, grounded in awareness rather than force. I believe it is the very same principal at work whenever I guide clients during sessions, where my main role is to support them in fostering that connection between highest self to their parts, thoughts, feelings ect.

Another dimension of this work that feels especially meaningful is the experience of connecting to something beyond the individual self. At times, this can feel deeply spiritual—like accessing layers of consciousness that are not confined to the ordinary, day-to-day human experience. In these moments, there is often a sense of expansion, as if identity loosens and awareness opens into something more spacious, interconnected, and difficult to fully define.

What’s powerful about this is not just the elevated personal experience, but how it changes the way we relate to others. When someone recognizes that they can access this deeper place within themselves, it becomes easier to see that same depth—and even a sense of divinity—in others. People are no longer reduced to their behaviors, wounds, or roles, but are instead seen through a lens of wholeness, humanity, and understanding.

From this perspective, which is heavily emphasized in transpersonal psychology, we begin to feel less separate. There is a growing awareness that we are all part of a larger web of interconnected beings—linked not only to one another, but to the environment and the world as a whole. This shift fosters compassion, humility, and a deeper sense of belonging, both within ourselves and in relationship to everything around us.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on spiritual bypassing during my ASE and TCP journey and, in truth, even long before. I’ve lived for over 30 years in a spiritual community, where, as in many spiritual environments, bypassing can easily become part of everyday language and practice.

What I’ve become increasingly aware of is how subtly spiritual bypassing can show up, both in personal practice and in facilitation. It often appears when we give in to the temptation to extract ourselves or our clients too quickly from difficult feelings, rather than staying present long enough to truly hold space for what is unfolding.

What strikes me most is that bypassing rarely comes from a lack of sincerity. More often, it arises from a genuine desire to transcend pain, complexity, or vulnerability, or from a sincere spiritual longing to access higher states of consciousness. The same dynamics can show up in coaching, particularly when spiritual language or practices are used to override difficult emotions, relational wounds or life challenges, rather than supporting their integration.

Becoming more trauma-aware has helped me appreciate how important it is to distinguish genuine transcendence from subtle forms of premature avoidance. This leaves me with some questions: how do we honour spiritual aspirations while staying grounded in the messy, human aspects of experience? And how do we discern this in our work with clients?

I’d love to hear how others here recognise or work with spiritual bypassing in their own inner work or professional practice.

Thank you for your reflexions and the reminder of re-memberance. It causes me to also contemplate our own need as coaches to be in observance to ourselves. We can easily be so focused on how we are here to be of service to a higher power/divinity/humanity but to truly be able to hold that dutiful space, we need to be taking care of our own needs. Our basic needs of course but also our continued self exploration in what ever form that might take. Without this we can easily either lose our own foundational grounding to be a holding space for clients or there may be the danger of identifying and inflating the ego self. Within Transpersonal Coaching we already have the tools to be able to help keep things in balance. Looking after our mental and spiritual health using meditational, awareness and somatic practices.

These practices are also so beneficial for helping us to see that there is a way of observing ourselves as the unique individual we are but also that we are not a sole separate entity. We are part of the beauty that is the whole, the collective, and our actions we choose to put in the world are not at something separate but towards and enmeshed in part of who we are too. Re-membering us to be that wholeness. Win-win-win, We are benefiting ourselves, that benefits others that in turn also benefits the greater broader environment.

Your reflection confirms something I have long known — the sacred call to remember.

To remember is to return — to go back to the essence of who we truly are beyond conditioning, beyond form, beyond the layers that life has wrapped around our being. Remembering is not about recalling the past, but about reclaiming the Self — that divine spark that has always been.

Through my own journey of remembrance and awakening, I have come to understand that this is where true liberation lies. It is the quiet yet powerful unfolding of consciousness that realigns us with our Higher power. It demands presence, intentionality, and courage — the willingness to see beyond illusion and to face the parts of self that once felt forgotten.

We do not go through this process solely for ourselves, but for the collective. Every time one soul remembers, the vibration of the whole is lifted. Within every life experience lies hidden knowledge waiting to be unveiled, for nothing in life is wasted. Each event is a key, designed to awaken us a little more to our true nature.

As transpersonal practitioners, holding space for remembrance is the highest form of service. We become mirrors through which others can recognize their own divine reflection and begin to remember who they are.

Dear Craig,

Reading your post, I found myself discovering a deeper meaning in the word re-member. It turned its previously hidden side toward me, revealing the sense of participation at its core. What shifted in me now is the relatedness in re-membering not just pointing to memory, but to member-ship. This shift beautifully symbolizes the equality of form among beings.

There's an expression deeply engraved in me, one I embodied through metaphysical studies earlier in my life, that says: “We’re equal, but not the same.” Indeed, this understanding places us in a position where it becomes nearly impossible to cause harm or to engage in the kinds of collective shadow you mentioned, like war, sexism, or racism.

While people often strive for external change or attempt to control circumstances through force, the true key, paradoxically, lies in transforming the world-view. Still, as we know by now, such inner transformations often require the presence of a compassionate other. In that presence, in that union, we are given the chance to return to our senses and evolve.

The sense of separateness inherently contains a body of suffering, giving rise to emotions like greed, jealousy, lack, competition, and comparison. But when we truly understand our interconnectedness, these emotions lose their relevance, they become obsolete.

Again and again, I see the power of the pillars of the transpersonal approach, and our role as transpersonal coaches — to hold space for that re-membering. To do so as equal partners in the coach-coachee relationship. In an open state of perception, where oneness is evident, the urge to force or control life dissolves, and resistance softens, and transformation can emerge naturally.

“My job is to be a space where nothing in me is preventing the changes that want to emerge in you.”
— Ram Dass

It points to me how the microcosm and macrocosm are enmeshed and one. We are not a drop in the ocean, but the ocean in a drop as the Sufi poet Rumi says. The survival mechanisms we may have put in place when children that caused us to numb ourselves or disassociate from some experience didn’t just have an effect on the thing we were not wanting to experience, but stopped us from experiencing so much more. As we shine light on the shadow the aperture of awareness widens naturally and we re-member who we are.

Open awareness lets us encourage that natural awareness to greaten. Seeing beyond the labels and identifications. But at the same time allows more strength of the personal expression to be in the world. With compassion, insight and wisdom.

My heart goes out to you and the family who are experiencing this loss.

A transpersonal perspective can be liberating during the grieving process, as it can help us to more fully realise that not all is lost. As you say “love never dies”. I believe, through my own experience, that our love for a family member who has passed can even grow stronger after they are no longer with us in physical form. Grieving takes time though and holding a compassionate space for those in grief is invaluable. Thank you!
